June is National Homeownership Month. This recognition can trace it’s beginnings to President Bill Clinton, when he established National Homeownership Week in 1995. President George W. Bush, in 2002, prolonged the importance of homeownership from a week to an entire month! This bipartisan recognition of homeownership shows why it’s important here in the US!
Owning a home is one of the most powerful ways families can build lasting wealth. Not only does homeownership shield families from the sting of rising rents and unpredictable housing costs, but a home can also grow in value over time. It can also be used to create generational wealth for future generations. It becomes a meaningful legacy, something families can pass down and build upon for years to come.
Homeownership has also contributed to neighborhood and community stability. Homeowners put down roots and invest in the places they call home. Homeowners tend to be less transient in communities and work to build the communities they live in. This investment looks like supporting schools, local small businesses that are often neighbors, and being more civically engaged where they live. By doing so, stronger neighborhoods and communities are formed. That kind of commitment is contagious, and it's what turns a street into a neighborhood and a neighborhood into a true community.
So this June, let's celebrate the homeowners who make our communities stronger, and the dream that keeps so many families working toward a place to call their own! To learn more about what is happening nationally, visit https://www.nar.realtor/june-is-national-homeownership-month
