On April 21, 2026, the Greenville County Council recognized the Human Relations Commission for its impactful financial counseling program in honor of Financial Literacy Month. A proclamation was presented highlighting the outstanding work in helping families and individuals build strong firm financial foundations.

Established in 2019, the Greenville FEC has quickly become a trusted community resource. Since opening its doors, the center has served more than 3,700 individuals and conducted nearly 12,000 one-on-one counseling sessions. These services are offered at no cost to residents, making professional financial guidance accessible to families and individuals from all walks of life.

The primary focus of the FEC’s counseling activities is helping residents create realistic, personalized plans to reach their financial goals. Counselors work closely with clients to improve credit scores, reduce debt, establish savings habits, create workable household budgets, and plan for major life milestones such as purchasing a home or preparing for emergencies. Each session is confidential and tailored to the client’s specific needs, ensuring practical solutions that lead to lasting financial confidence.

The Greenville FEC is part of the national Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund network, which supports more than 120 Financial Empowerment Centers across the country. Greenville is proud to be home to the first FEC in South Carolina, paving the way for expanded services statewide, with another center now operating in Charleston.

Throughout Financial Literacy Month, the Greenville FEC extended its outreach efforts across the community. Staff participated in local resource fairs and delivered presentations on the importance of building and maintaining strong credit to students at Clemson University. Educational giveaways were also shared with county employees to raise awareness of the services available through the Human Relations Commission and the Financial Empowerment Center.

As financial challenges continue to affect households across the Upstate, the Greenville Financial Empowerment Center stands as a beacon of support—helping residents gain knowledge, confidence, and control over their financial futures.
